How Startups Get Stuck at Step 3

You've done the hard part — or so it seems:

  • Step 1: You've joined the AWS Partner Network (APN)
  • Step 2: You've enrolled in the Software Path
  • Step 3: You're staring at a Better Together story that isn't valuable

This is the moment where momentum breaks down for a lot of startups. You're in the system. You've taken the steps. But without a compelling Better Together story, you're invisible to the AWS field — and everything you've done up to this point feels like it's leading nowhere.

🔍 Why Step 3 Is the Bottleneck

Because this is the first time AWS asks: "Why should we care?"

And most partners aren't ready to answer that. They either:

  • Over-index on product features
  • Write for customers instead of AWS sellers
  • Default to generic, vague positioning (e.g. "secure, scalable, AI-powered")

The result? A stalled co-sell motion, no field traction, and a fast track to frustration.

🛠️ What You Actually Need

To unlock Step 3 and move toward ISV Accelerate activation, you need two things:

1. A Better Together story designed for AWS sellers

  • It speaks to a real customer pain AWS sees in the field
  • It's tied to AWS workload growth or service consumption
  • It addresses one of the four pillars of the AWS Cloud Value Framework
  • And it's simple and repeatable — something a rep can pitch on your behalf

2. A clear plan for where it lives and how it's used

  • Is it embedded in ACE opportunities?
  • Is it aligned with your Marketplace listing?
  • Are your partner-facing teams enabled to tell this story at scale?
  • Are your sellers aware of how to communicate this to AWS?

🧭 This Is Step 3 in the 7-Step Framework

If you joined my Cracking the AWS Co-Sell Code webinar, you'll remember the seven-step roadmap to AWS co-sell traction.

Step 3 isn't a form — it's a filter. It's where the real work begins in becoming a partner that will see genuine ROI from their relationship with AWS. It separates the ISVs who show up with a real GTM motion from those still waiting for AWS to do it for them.

If you're stuck here, you're not alone — and there's a way to unblock it. If you want to sharpen your story or make sure it aligns with field priorities in APAC or globally, feel free to reach out.
